String Quartet
Pursuit.
Fast, taut and relentless, Pursuit is built from a single idea: a driving quaver motif that never truly stops.
The piece opens with the figure already in motion, and from there it becomes the engine of the whole quartet.
Passed from violin to viola to cello and back again, the motif migrates around the ensemble - sometimes fragmented, inverted or chased in close imitation.
The effect is of a perpetual chase.
While one part carries the line, the others provide flickering accompaniment, sharp interjections or a counter-chase in close canon.
The texture is constantly shifting, but the forward energy never lets up until the final dash to the close.
A study in momentum, dialogue, and the excitement of four players listening and reacting at speed.
Running time 3 mins 48 secs.
