City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus (CBSO Chorus)

I am a founder member of the CBSO Chorus which was formed in 1973. Working closely with Musical Directors Sir Simon Rattle, Sakari Oramo, Andris Nelsons, Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and Chorus Director Simon Halsey, the Chorus has since grown in size and stature, performing with the CBSO and now regularly in demand from world famous orchestras such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, St Petersburg Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Vienna Symphony Orchestras. We have sung in all major concert venues in the UK, toured extensively across Europe - Vienna, Madrid, Granada (singing in the open air Alhambra Palace), Leipzig and the Salzburg Festival - and the USA, and made over 50 recordings both with the CBSO and independently and won four Gramophone awards. We appeared at the official opening of Symphont hall in 1999. We embarked on a momentous world tour in August 2000, performing Janacek's "Glagolitic Mass" at Festival Vancouver with Andrew Litton and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and opened the Sydney 2000 Olympic Arts Festival 'Harbour of Life' with Edo de Waart and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In 2002 the Chorus took part in some of our most prestigious engagements to date, including performances of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Vienna Philharmonic under Sir Simon Rattle at the Musikverein, and the opening concert of the Manchester Commenwealth Games Festval in Mahler's Symphony No. .8. In January 2004 we flew to Helsinki to join Sakari and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra for the Finnish premiere of Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius. In September we met with the Berlin Philharmonic for performances of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony at the Proms and in Birmingham. 2006 started in spectacular style with a week-long tour to Hong Kong performing Mahler's 2nd Symphony and Fauré's Requiem. The Chorus saw in 2007 with a tour to Lyon and Grenoble to perform Beethoven's Symphony No.9 with the Orchestre National de Lyon under the baton of Jun Märkl. In April 2008 we were invited to perform The Sea symphony of Vaughn Williams at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, Kuala Lumpur with Martyn Brabbins and the Malaysian Philharmonic. We gave the 40th anniversary performance of Britten's War Requiem at Coventry Catherdal in 2002 and returned to give the 50th anniversary performance under Andris Nelsons - an occasion that was broadcast live to 17 countries. We perform regularly with orchestras across Britain and in 2017 featured at the BBC Proms in the European premiere of Sir James MacMillan's Requiem For Europe.
